“In a million years I never thought I’d be flipping tires and carrying buckets of rocks at 5:45 in the morning, never mind twice a week,” said Gina Douglas Normand.
Normand is one of 20 others ranging in age from 25 to 65, of all athletic skill levels, who make up the Green Mountain Warriors training at the Shelburne Field House each Monday and Friday morning.
Green Mountain Warriors is the brainchild of Rayne Herzog, General Manager of Shelburne Field House. “I wanted to create a new exercise program that was a mixture of Boot Camp, Spartan and CrossFit”, he said.
Herzog has his warriors flip 200-pound and 400-pound tires, carry 40-pound buckets of rocks, push a wheel barrow with 300 pounds of bricks in a loop around the inside of the field house. That, in addition to lifting weights, running sprints with a parachute, and a core workout that includes squats, lunges, burpees, pushups and sit-ups and planks.
“I was looking for a new challenge to add to my workout regime, and I have my sights on entering a Spartan race this fall,” said Normand. “When Rayne mentioned he was starting a warrior workout I thought hey, it sounds kind of crazy, but why not?”
Over the course of six months, Normand has gotten to the point where she can flip the 400-pound tire all on her own.
“I feel so much stronger now, but it is not just about me,” she said. “The camaraderie with the group is fantastic and we each push each other. We have so much fun tackling the obstacles together and meeting the challenges Rayne puts out for us.”
In turn, Herzog has four goals for his warriors. “Strength, endurance, perseverance and fun,” he said. “I want to help everyone find their path and their inner strength.”
Anyone can join the warriors and all skill levels are welcomed. “All I ask is to have an open mind and heart and go at the pace you need to go,” Herzog said.
